KITCHEN CONVERSATION TOPIC #101 --
Where did the name Extreme Unction come from?

It was an English adaptation of "Unctio in Extremis" -- anointing at the final moment. A person's condition was often described as "in extremis," close to dying.
The prayers of the sacrament now focus on the healing of a person who experiences some need for healing, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. The prayers ask the Lord's forgiveness and healing in a variety of circumstances, including any person's need should they be near to dying.
A person should ask for the Anointing of the Sick in any serious illness or some days before a serious operation.
"Mother may not make it. Better call the priest." Good idea, but the priest should have been called earlier, so that mother could join in the prayers and receive Holy Communion. Near to dying, the priest should be called for a final Communion, if workable -- and the prayers for the dying -- beautiful and consoling prayers.
The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament for the living. That's why we have a special Anointing Mass next Sunday. That's how the sacrament is available for each person when they enter a hospital.

THE GOOD NEWS -- Today's readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job complains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse yet, "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle; / they come to an end without hope" (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, these lamentations, not when taken alone.
Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is the "good news" that Paul found so compelling that "an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!" (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce the gospel to as many people as possible, "to save at least some" (9:22).
This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Peter's mother-in-law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. "The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons" (Mark 1:33-34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job's, and Jesus is our savior.
