ST. VINCENT de PAUL -- RECENT STEWARDSHIP ACCOUNTING -- The men and women of St. Ursula St. Vincent de Paul Society do their best to come to the aid of local families and individuals. Some type of emergency situation leads people to ask for help from "St. Vincent de Paul." The society members know that their help will not solve the entire situation but will relieve the immediate pressure when someone has no where else to turn.

The members are grateful for your support which makes their activity possible.

Just to give a report of recent months activity, the St. Ursula Vincent de Paul, sometimes joining with another conference, providing the following a hint of their work, so far in 2010.

This represents assistance for food, shelter, and a variety of emergency needs for 49 persons.

Where do the funds come from?

  1. A special box in the church vestibule
  2. A check in the Sunday Offering marked "St. Vincent"
  3. Companies or corporations have programs for making contributions or "matching" grants to non-profits where employees or retirees work. (That was the source for a recent $500.00 grant).
The members are grateful to all those who support this valuable way our parish can answer "the cry of the poor." They pray for you, the Society's benefactors.

HUMILITY
The biblical virtue of humility often gets mistranslated in our world. Many think of humility as ongoing self-effacement or even self-degradation. Humility, as the scriptures use it, is a sense of true self-awareness, of one's capacities and abilities. A false humility is actually a kind of deceit, and is often a mask for the face of arrogance that lies beneath it. Thus Sirach today tells us not to seek what is too sublime for us, or to search out what is beyond our strength. We are called to have an awareness of what we are able to grasp, and with what we are strong enough to contend. Scriptural humility also has about it an openness to the goodness of others and what is best in them. That is why both Sirach and Luke's Jesus instruct us not to deny our own self-worth, but to be ready to elevate and acclaim what is good or great in others. When we live this way, we are closer to understanding how God views all of us. We ought not place ourselves, but others, first. In living this humble way, we are living out of the heart of God, who is always ready to raise us up in honor at the table of the heavenly banquet.

RESPITE TIME NEEDED -- Jesus promises us, "Whatsoever you do for the least of my people, that you do unto me." On occasion a parishioner caring for an elderly parent or one caring for an ailing spouse will ask -- "Do you know of a parishioner who is willing to volunteer some time to lend a watchful eye or a listening ear?

It is a labor of love to care for someone near and dear -- but even in giving freely in love, we all need a little time away -- sometimes that break is needed in service to that loved one! The tasks of banking, shopping and just taking care of everyday outside business become difficult if no one is else to help out the care giver.

If there are any parishioners willing and able to lend a hand volunteering to spend time with a parishioner for a couple of hours a week, please call Sr. Janice 412-486-6700 ext. 7 to leave a message with your name and phone number.

LEADERSHIP IN FAITH -- SHARING -- We are fortunate that Sister Joanita Fedor, Sister of Charity of Nazareth has returned as the principal of St. Ursula School.

WHAT IS A PARISH? WHAT DOES IT DO? -- You can answer the question in many ways. This weekend we are stating who we are with the Apostles in mind -- sent out to teach as Jesus did. They gathered families into "Churches" to learn of Christ, His message, His life, the sharing of His life.

This weekend parents and children, grandparents and uncles and aunts are all engaged in what we do as a parish: our work, learning and following Christ. We have begun St. Ursula School for the one hundredth time. We are preparing for another year of religious education for our children in other schools. All this activity tells more than "what we do," it tells "who we are." The very core of our church, our parish is the sharing of the truth and life of following Christ -- with children importantly -- with all necessarily.
